Apple’s iPhone 5s Was Best Selling Smartphone Over Past Three Months
According to a research report by Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkly, Apple’s iPhone 5s was the best selling smartphone at all four major carriers including AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile. This being the year of two new iPhones, Apple’s lower-cost iPhone 5c found itself among the top three in sales. Apple’s main competition remains Samsung, the second best selling phone.
The report cites ‘strong’ sales of the iPhone 5s and ‘steady’ sales of the iPhone 5c. Apple dominated sales for September, October and November of this year buoyed by the product launches that happened in September. They’ve had the benefit of a new products heading into the holiday season. Samsung’s Galaxy S4 was released in April, 2013, lacking the buzz surrounding Apple’s iPhones.
“Before the iPhone 5s and 5c’s release, Apple, Samsung, HTC, Nokia, Sony, and Motorola all had handsets enjoying top-three sales at at least one of America’s big four carriers. Apple’s September announcement pushed all but Samsung out of the picture and relegated the South Korean conglomerate’s Galaxy S4 to the runner-up position across the board.”
Apple has had difficulty keeping the iPhone 5s in stock up until recently. Supplies were severely constrained at launch, with the company making steady progress to meet demand. The U.S. Apple Store now shows a 24 hour shipping window for most models and carriers. T-Mobile and SIM-free models ship in 1-3 days.
The past few months have seen retailers discount both models, including the flagship iPhone 5s. Some retailers have reduced the iPhone 5c to free on contract, with the iPhone 5s seeing a sub-$100 price.
